Beginning in the summer of 2008 a major effort was launched to bring some much needed shade at the Kern County Gun Club. Individual donors opened their wallets to allow dozens of trees to be planted on both the skeet and sporting clay fields. Skeet chairman Jack McGee and sporting clays chairman Brad O'Rear have been instrumental in making this happen.

Membership in the Kern County Gun Club has exceeded the 300 mark and is growing every week. In recent months the club has added a new sporting clay facility and increased the number of youth programs. In addition, many local companies like San Joaquin Bank are using the club for private events to treat their shareholders to an afternoon of busting clays. These are some of the men and women who make up our club, all of whom have one thing in common: the love of the shotgun sports.

The Kenny Barnes Open was a successful one in 2008, featuring some of the best shooters in the country: Ron Hurlbert, Lori Desatoff, Wayne Mayes, Billy Dee Williams, Brett McLaughlin, Larry Sifers, Shawn Rommel, Kurt Grates, Hal Stewart and many more. Wayne Mayes took HOA honors with a 399, coming up just one short of the elusive four-by that made Barnes famous. The weather cooperated and the scores reflected it.
Thanks to Cyndi Benson and her crew of helpers, the Scholastic Clays program is off to a wonderful start. The program runs once a month and the kids learn skeet, trap and five stand. It's a program that is growing every month.

Earlier this year (2007) Jack McGee dedictated Field 9 to the memory of his son, Jimmy. Jack put in the sweat equity (not to mention money) to make Field 9 a premier field in memory of Jimmy. There was a small dedication ceremony with a group of Jack's friends and supporters to dedicate the field and enjoy some shooting.
